"Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs"
What is "Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs"?

A program run with the help of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife that will help teach the fundamentals of fishing: safety, fish identification, proper handling of fish, fish biology, and proper ethical angling. The aim is to expose kids from 5 to 15 to the art of fishing in hopes to give them a lifelong interest in the family sport, and to help lead them away from any interest in the shadier things in life.

2011 Event

We'd like to thank everyone who attended our 4th Annual youth fishing event, "Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs" held at the GSC June 4th, 2011. The weather was perfect, the fish (big & small) were biting and the kids had a wonderful time. We want to thank the local schools-Teresa C. Hamlin Elementary School; Helen Thompson School; River View Community School; Pittston Consolidated School & Laura E. Richards School-for their participation this year in helping us get the word out to the various families who attended. With the support from some great sponsors, we were once again able to provide all of the kids that came and participated in the day a Zebco rod & reel set, t-shirt, a hardy lunch and a good supply of giveaways. From the comments we received as people were leaving, the day was another great success as the families were able to bond while spending a relaxing day by the edge of the stream. We would like to thank the following as without their help, we couldn’t do what we do: Emily Jones and the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department for their great hand-outs; On Top, Inc for helping with and printing the t-shirts; CCB, Inc. for generously purchasing the t-shirts; Ainslie’s Market for ice and food supplies; all of the club members who came and worked with the kids and helped cook; club member and all around kids event supporter Charles Wilson for the wonderful pictures; and last but not least, the kids and parents who attended – thank you to all!

2010 Event
We'd like to thank everyone who attended our 3rd Annual youth fishing event, "Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs" held at the GSC August 21st, 2010. Once again the weather was beautiful and everyone caught fish. Just over 30 kids and their parents or grandparents joined us for a day that coincided with “The Open” bass tournament and included hands-on guidance from our Sportsmen's Club members, food, prizes and a chance to see and help release some lunkers at the end day from the tournament anglers. With the support of some great sponsors, again this year we were able to provide all of the kids that came and participated in the day a Zebco 202 rod, t-shirt, a hardy lunch and a good supply of raffle prizes. From the comments we received as people were leaving, the day was another great success. We would like to thank Emily Jones and the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife department for supporting us again; On Top, Inc for helping with the t-shirts; Moosehead Bait & Tackle for providing us with bait; The Sportsman's BARR for helping with the rods and reels; Gerard’s Pizza, Randolph Takeout, A1 To Go Café, Dennis Pizza, E & M Malcolm and L & H Gerard for raffle prizes and general support (we apologize if we missed anyone); WABK for helping us promote the event; all of the club members who came and worked with the kids and helped cook; and last but not least, the kids and parents who attended. While it was a good idea and learning experience to combine the two events together (Hooked & The Open) attendance was down somewhat because of the later date. In an effort to concentrate better on the kids and Hooked, we will be moving the event back to the first week in June and will work with the local schools to identify our target audience/attendees. Keep an eye out for 2011's date to be released soon.

This year we were able to provide all of the kids that came and participated in the day a Zebco 202 rod, reel & tackle kit, a t-shirt, a hardy lunch and a good supply of raffle prizes. From the comments we received as people were leaving, the day was another great success. We would like to thank Emily Jones and the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife department for supporting us and providing some very nice equipment and items for giveaways; Tim Morgan and All Star Screen Printing & Embroidery for donating the t-shirts; raffle prize donators The Sportsman's BARR, New Mills Market, Gosline's Hardware, West Gardiner 4 Corners Pizza, Harvey's Hardware; & Curt Malcolm (we apologize if we missed anyone); WABK & the Kennebec Journal for helping us promote the event; all of the club members who came and worked with the kids and helped cook; club member and photographer Charles Wilson; and especially the kids and parents who attended. Keep an eye out for 2010's date and plan on joining us.
